For Shame...

Well, Virginia has gone and slapped us with the sticker of shame. My car did not pass their snooty state inspection. As if it wasn't bad enough that the trusty (or not so trusty) Geo had to tuck her tailpipe between her tires and drive away...the inspector plastered a pink rejection sticker on the front windshield. So the whole world knows, the Geo has been rejected by the state of Virginia. Bastards.
Basically what this means is that we have to get her fixed within 15 days and try the inspection again. The inspector said there is a leak in the exhaust system. Dad thinks it is a leak in the donut gasket between the manifold and exhaust pipe....or something fancy like that.
Midas here we come.

Poor Geo. Ohio would have treated her much kinder. We aren't afraid of a little exhaust up here! Hope you get her fixed and she's up an running again.

Love, mom

Li'l Geo is probably running clean as ever. The leak is likely just preventing them from taking a valid measurement. The Hummvees in the next lane are spewing polution to beat the band -- but no badge of shame. So unfair. Good luck.

Poor little GEO. She's probably approaching automobilopause, when things start creaking a little. I know you and Ben will be gentle with the old girl--her metabolism ain't what it used to be.

I hope Midas can help remove the sticker of shame VA officials slapped on her (those heartless beasts). Good luck--great post!

Nothing a little welding job won't fix! The S-10 had at least two or three exhaust leaks (including the while damn thing rusting off) during the days I drove it. It wasn't too expensive as long as they weren't having to replace the catalytic converter. I'm not sure what the market price in VA is, though. Hopefully you'll get by without it costing too much, though! Good luck!

Oh, dear, your mom just emailed me that it'll be $1200 to fix the poor old girl. So sorry. Maybe a second opinion from some local mechanic? Good luck.

Love,

Holy crap!!! What's wrong with it, again? They're not trying to replace the entire exhaust system, are they? That doesn't seem right if there's only a small leak at some point. I would definitely suggest taking Aunt Martha's advice and getting a second opinion at a local mechanic's. $1200 seems a little excessive. But I'm not a mechanic, so who knows.
